What is BBS?
BBS stands for bulletin board system. It allows user to communicate with each other through posts and replies. It was first invented in the 1970s and is now widely used worldwide. There are many BBS platforms such as V-Bulletin, phpBB etc. We chose phpBB because of its flexibility for customization.
Why BBS?
A BBS allows students to communicate with each other in ways other channels cannot. Your message will reach out to all students very much like Reversed Student's Digest. But now, your message can be more than text. It can include all kinds of multimedia elements. More importantly, unlike Reserved Student Digest which is sent daily and get expired after that day, posts on SwatBBS stay active for a long time. It is great for posting things that do not become obsolete after a week.
Swarthmore is not the first college that has organized BBS site. Haverford has their student-run dashboard that includes a board section. Williams has Williams Students Online which has discussion forums in many categories.
Who are behind SwatBBS?
Behind SwatBBS are a group of highly motivated Swatties. We believe in the importance of discussion and sharing of ideas in Swarthmore. We aim to create a stimulating platform that caters to different student needs.
Project Ideas
SwatBBS do projects that are best conducted through the Internet media. Following projects are lined up for further planning. You are welcome to suggest new projects for us and join us to accomplish them.
We know you have to miss them when you are busy and we want you to benefit from these great occasions.
Swattie-made Music Collection
Swarthmore is a land of musicians, composers and rock stars. Wouldn't it be nice if you can hear all of the a Capella, band, chamber productions on one single site? It is also a great way to promote Swarthmore artists.
Swarthmore Poem & Literature Festival
Have you ever read a short story written by a Swattie? Or maybe a poem? What if you missed the submission for Small Craft Warning? On SwatBBS, you are always welcome to unleash your creativity energy and write something nice. English Professors will be invited to pick the best pieces.
